Using Your Packaging to Evoke Emotion

emotional packaging

Impactful packaging can do so much; add value to a product, build a connection with customers, and even evoke positive emotions in consumers. By integrating certain design features into product packaging, brands can make consumers feel a range of emotions, such as nostalgia, happiness, energy, and even feelings of health.

So, how do we evoke an emotion using packaging?

Colours

Specific colours communicate certain feelings, such as yellow conveying energy and green conveying health. Integrating these colours into a packaging design is a simple and effective way to trigger positive feelings in consumers and relate the feeling back to the brand.

Use Imagery

Depending on what the product is, using imagery can go a long way in contributing to the overall feeling of a packaging design. For example, using images of greenery or plants can demonstrate health and sustainability, in addition to using the colour green. Another example would be adding vintage imagery or black-and-white sketches to a packaging design to evoke feelings of nostalgia.

Keep It Simple

It's important not to overcomplicate packaging design as clarity is crucial in being able to evoke emotion successfully. Sticking to basic imagery, clean fonts, and only a few colours can make packaging impactful and communicate a clear message to consumers.
