How Did They Start?

In 2002, Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Matthews, founder of Blue Ribbon Files, created 1% for the Planet after meeting and bonding over their shared love for the outdoors. Understanding that companies profit from the resources they take from the earth, they both realized their responsibility to protect these resources and better protect our planet.

What Do They Do?

From the beginning, Yvon Chouinard and Craig Matthews pledged to give 1% of their sales back to the environment - whether or not they were profitable. Since then, many brands have followed suit and joined the 1% for the Planet movement. As of 2019, there are 2,000 members in over 45 countries, as well as over $225 million raised in support of approved environmental non-profits.

How Are We Partnered?

1% of the sales of our compostable stand up pouches are donated to the Climate Collaborative, who educates the natural foods industry about being sustainable. We are also on the Pacific North West Steering committee for 1% for the Planet, where we give feedback about upcoming campaigns.
